A fixed glass roof, sliding glass panels and motorised zip screens on a terrace overlooking the garden
An upper-floor terrace with a metal balustrade and an open view over the garden, exposed to full sun. We covered it with an anthracite grey aluminium structure and a fixed glass roof, and along the open sides combined sliding glass panels with motorised zip screens. The light can now be adjusted to the time of day and the season, without the terrace losing its view.
The upper-floor terrace already had its balustrade and a wide view across the garden. Uncovered and without any shade, though, it was more a place to pass through than a place to stay. The challenge was to protect it without losing exactly what made it valuable: the light and the view.
We installed a powder-coated aluminium structure in anthracite grey, with a fixed glass roof carried on slender rafters. The terrace is protected from rain, yet stays just as bright as before.
Along the open sides we combined sliding glass panels, which can close the space completely, with motorised zip screens. The screen fabric is held in side guides, and each screen lowers independently, exactly to the height it is needed.
The terrace is now used at any hour: with the screens raised and a clear view of the garden, or lowered just far enough for the shade to fall where it is needed. The micro-perforated fabric filters the sun but keeps the outline of the trees, so the space never turns into a closed box.
